Parasite Prevention – Which Prevention Works Best For Your Pets?

Itching, scratching, allergies and more! There are many different parasites that can affect our pets all year round. How do you know which is the right parasite prevention for you? Below I’ll break down the many different types of parasite prevention we carry here, at Sunrise Animal Hospital.

 

For Canines and Felines:

Advantage/Advantage II: Advantage is an over the counter, monthly, topical treatment that is usually sold in packages of 6. You can purchase a single dose if the Advantage is applied in clinic by one of the hospital’s staff. Advantage II works against both adult fleas and flea eggs.

Advantage Multi: Is a prescription only, monthly, topical treatment that is sold both in single doses and packages of 6. Advantage Multi works against several parasites including but not limited to fleas, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and heartworm.

Revolution: Is a prescription only, monthly, topical treatment that can purchased in either a package of 6 or a single dose. Revolution protects against fleas, hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, ear mites, heartworm and other parasites.

Capstar: Is an over-the-counter oral treatment that provides fast relief against fleas. Capstar begins working within 30 minutes and can be given once daily. It kills only adult fleas and lasts 24 hours. Capstar can be sold by the box or as single pill.

Comfortis: Is a prescription only, flavored oral treatment that treats and protects against fleas for a month. It is sold in packages of 6.

Interceptor: Is a prescription only, flavored oral dewormer for dogs and cats. It protects against heartworms, controls adult hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

Cestex: Is an oral, prescription only, dewormer for the removal of tapeworms.

For Canines Only:

K9 Advantix: Is a prescription only, topical, monthly treatment that protects against fleas and ticks. It can be sold in single doses and packages of 6. Please note: Advantix is toxic to cats and if your dog shares a home with a cat avoid using Advantix.

Sentinel: Is a prescription only, monthly, flavored oral treatment that protects against fleas, hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and French heartworm which we have in NL. Sentinel is sold in single doses or packages of 6.

Bravecto: Is a prescription only, oral flavored chew that protects against fleas and ticks. It works for three months and can be sold in single doses and a package of two.

Trifexis: Is a prescription only, monthly chewable oral treatment that kills fleas, hookworm, roundworms, whipworm and prevent heartworm. Trifexis is sold by the package or as a single dose.

Drontal: Is a prescription only, bimonthly oral dewormer that kills adult hookworms, roundworms, whipworm, and tapeworm.

LouisFelines Only:

Profendor  Is a prescription only, topical, monthly treatment against hookworm, roundworm, and tapeworm. It is sold in single doses.

Program: Treats against fleas. Orally, it is sold in packages of 6 over-the-counter. As an injection, it is prescription only, and treats against fleas for 6 months.

Droncit: Oral, prescription only, treatment against tapeworm.

 


Other Pets:

Rabbits: Revolution can be used for rabbits as well. It is prescription only. Please contact us if you have any questions about parasite control for rabbits.

Ferrets: Advantage Multi for Cats can be used for the treatment of fleas in ferrets. It is prescription only and can be sold in packages of 6 or as a single dose.
