Behavioural issues can arise for many different reasons at any time during a dog’s life and potentially worsen over time. If you are concerned about your dog’s behaviour, our veterinarians can discuss potential causes for the behaviour and what we can do to help your dog.

How can behavioural counselling help my dog’s behaviour?

We adapt our lives to reflect our dog’s quirks and ease their behavioural issues. Sometimes, this is not enough and even a small behavioural change from yourself can make a big impact on your dog. At times, a combination of prescription medications and behavioural modification is required. Your veterinarian can help you find the perfect balance that works for you and your dog.

What happens at the initial dog counselling meeting?

Your veterinarian will gather information from you and find out the history behind the unfavourable behaviour. We will also ask about how you’ve adapted and approached this behaviour. Many times, it takes a combination of the owner altering their own behaviour, along with training to avoid the unfavourable behaviour. Any photos or videos would be highly recommended, as it may be difficult to recreate the behaviour in the appointment.

Will my pet insurance policy covers the cost of dog behaviour counselling?

Some pet insurance policies will cover behaviour counselling, the best option is to contact your insurance provider directly.

What can I expect after the consultation?

All experiences are different, however, it does take consistency and practice at home. At times, your veterinarian may refer you to a dog trainer to work on the specific behaviour or may recommend a prescription medication to assist. Persistence and routine are key to success.
